Spring ’15 – General Outlines and Courses

Dear Students,

In order to have a semester with the least number of problems, it would be beneficial for you to abide by the following rules:

  • By registering a course, students agree to the terms, conditions, and regulations announced course web page under the lecturer’s web site provided officially by Istanbul Commerce University.
  • Students are obliged to follow
    • Istanbul Commerce University official website
    • Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering official website
    • Lecturer’s website provided officially by Istanbul Commerce University

    However, Istanbul Commerce University is not responsible for the accuracy of any of the information supplied by the owner of the website unless otherwise stated. In case any dispute or conflict arises related to the content of the web page, the printed and signed notices, data, documents, files and all other forms/sorts of information of Istanbul Commerce University will prevail.

  • All students are expected to maintain the academic integrity. There will be no tolerance to any form of cheating, plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration and/or cooperation.
  • According to the University rules, regulations, and guidelines (Chapter Four, Section related to the attendance, Item 25, first clause [in Turkish]), all students who have already enrolled the course should attend at least 70% of the lectures throughout the semester of interest. Students who do not meet the attendance criterion will fail with the letter grade “IA“. It is students’ responsibility to follow up with their intermittent attendance status throughout the semester.   • In case a problem and/or dispute emerges related to lectures such as grading, office hours, and so on, it must be consulted the lecturer face to face. Students are responsible for the consequences of not consulting the lecturer but of taking advice from some others.

Short Bio of Ufuk Gürpınar

The talk that will be held on December 01st, 2014, Monday for Fall ’14 – [EEE101] Introduction to Electrical Engineering will be delivered by Ms. Ufuk Gürpınar from Netaş. As an expert in her field of study, she will be sharing his experiences, ideas, and knowledge with the students throughout the talk. Her short bio is given below:


Ufuk Gurpinar, was born in 1975, Denizli. She obtained her undergraduate degree in EE at METU in 1999. Between 1999-2000, she worked for TUBITAK BILTEN. She is working at Netaş since 2000 in various departments including R&D as design engineer, group manager, and software architect. She is currently working in C20 Call Control Application project as design group manager.

The lecture that will be held on November 10th, 2014, Monday for Fall ’14 – [EEE101] Introduction to Electrical Engineering course will be delivered by Mr. Ilker Eren from Siemens. As an expert in his field of study, he will be sharing his experiences, ideas, and knowledge with the students throughout the lecture time. His short bio is given below:


 

Ilker Eren was born in Afyon, Turkey in 1977. He received the Engineering Degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Technical University of Istanbul in 1999 and the MSc degree from Pamukkale University, Denizli, in 2003. He worked as a project engineer at an automation company between 1999-2006 in Denizli. He had own automation company in 2006 and sold his company in 2007. He has been working at Siemens since 2007. He has worked as project engineer in OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture – Machine Manufactures) Department for two years, Sales and Marketing Specialist for S7 PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) for two years and still working as Product Marketing Manager for industrial communication products since 2011.

Students who do, attempt to, try to attempt to cheat in any form and/or violate the University rules, regulations, and guidelines regarding academic integrity and dishonesty will be taken seriously. The instructor/supervisor will submit a formal complaint to CoD. A discipline file including the letter defining the type of violation will be formed and documented for those students who violate the University rules, regulations, and guidelines regarding academic integrity and dishonesty. The discipline file then will be stored and affiliated with the student’s academic records. Major academic integrity and honesty topics along with relevant prohibited actions are listed below:
      • Plagiarism
        • Do NOT have someone carry out/prepare any form of project, research, homework for yourself.
        • Do NOT take, copy, replicate, reproduce, imitate data, result, comment, idea, etc. of anyone else with or without the permission of his/her.
      • Unauthorized collaboration/cooperation
        • Do NOT collaborate/cooperate with others unless otherwise stated by the instructor.
      • Cheating
        • Do NOT ask somebody else to do your work for you.
        • Do NOT fabricate, fake, and/or misrepresent your results.
        • Do NOT use any form of portable electronic devices and/or computers during the exam.
        • Do NOT let somebody else cheat.

  • Final Exam
    • According to the University rules, regulations, and guidelines (Chapter Five, Section related to the exams, Item 29, first clause [in Turkish]), mid-term exam will take place between the dates announced in the university academic calendar. Note that the exact date, time, location, and duration of the mid-term exam will be announced within the semester on the Istanbul Commerce University, official website. Furthermore, as stated with the item (c), each and every student should provide their official government ID cards and university ID cards with the exam proctors and bring all of the tools necessary for the exam.
  • Course logistics and organization
    • Students are responsible for checking with the course webpage for any announcements, updates, changes, modifications, and so on throughout the semester.
    • Office hours designated for the course are going to be carried out on FCFS basis. Students are expected to respect other students in terms of sharing the office hours in a fair way.
    • Instructor will cover all of the topics announced on the Bologna portal webpage. However, based on the performance of the students throughout the semester, instructor could change, modify, and update the organization of the course without prior notice.
    • Numerical grades for exam results will be posted on the course homepage as soon as they are available. It is highly recommended for students to check with their exam results in time, which roughly covers the following week of the day on which the results are announced online. In case students feel that there might a problem in grading, they are encouraged to view their exam papers at the discretion of the instructor. Viewing the exam paper of somebody else is not allowed.
    • It is not allowed to use any form of digital/analog recording, transmitting, receiving mechanism and/or device within the classroom/office during the lectures and/or office hour sections without the permission of the instructor.

Grading Policy:

  • Assessment of the activities to be carried out throughout the semester is as follows:
    • [50%] Prior to The Final Exam Part (which consists of):
      • [20%] Homework, assignments, PuQ, and all other activities
      • [30%] Mid-term Exam
    • [50%] Final Exam Part
  • Based on the items listed above, a numerical grade is obtained.
  • Numerical grades will be converted into letter grades based on the following rules:
    • There will be a threshold value below which will be considered to correspond to “fail.” Value of the threshold will be determined by the instructor at the end of the semester.
    • A statistical curve will be applied to those students whose numerical grades are equal to or above the threshold value given that there is sufficient number of students to establish the desired statistical significance level. In case a sufficient number of students is not available, the lecturer has right to assign letter grades based on his personal observations and conviction taking into account in-semester scores obtained by each and every student.

  • Final Exam
    • According to the University rules, regulations, and guidelines (Chapter Five, Section related to the exams, Item 29, first clause [in Turkish]), mid-term exam will take place between the dates announced in the university academic calendar. Note that the exact date, time, location, and duration of the mid-term exam will be announced within the semester on the Istanbul Commerce University, official website. Furthermore, as stated with the item (c), each and every student should provide their official government ID cards and university ID cards with the exam proctors and bring all of the tools necessary for the exam.
  • Course logistics and organization
    • Students are responsible for checking with the course webpage for any announcements, updates, changes, modifications, and so on throughout the semester.
    • Office hours designated for the course are going to be carried out on FCFS basis. Students are expected to respect other students in terms of sharing the office hours in a fair way.
    • Instructor will cover all of the topics announced on the Bologna portal webpage. However, based on the performance of the students throughout the semester, instructor could change, modify, and update the organization of the course without prior notice.
    • Numerical grades for exam results will be posted on the course homepage as soon as they are available. It is highly recommended for students to check with their exam results in time, which roughly covers the following week of the day on which the results are announced online. In case students feel that there might a problem in grading, they are encouraged to view their exam papers at the discretion of the instructor. Viewing the exam paper of somebody else is not allowed.
    • It is not allowed to use any form of digital/analog recording, transmitting, receiving mechanism and/or device within the classroom/office during the lectures and/or office hour sections without the permission of the instructor.

Grading Policy:

  • Assessment of the activities to be carried out throughout the semester is as follows:
    • [50%] Prior to The Final Exam Part (which consists of):
      • [20%] Homework, assignments, PuQ, and all other activities
      • [30%] Mid-term Exam
    • [50%] Final Exam Part
  • Based on the items listed above, a numerical grade is obtained.
  • Numerical grades will be converted into letter grades based on the following rules:
    • There will be a threshold value below which will be considered to correspond to “fail.” Value of the threshold will be determined by the instructor at the end of the semester.
    • A statistical curve will be applied to those students whose numerical grades are equal to or above the threshold value given that there is sufficient number of students to establish the desired statistical significance level. In case a sufficient number of students is not available, the lecturer has right to assign letter grades based on his personal observations and conviction taking into account in-semester scores obtained by each and every student.

  • All students are expected to maintain the academic integrity. There will be no tolerance to any form of cheating, plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration and/or cooperation.
  • According to the University rules, regulations, and guidelines (Chapter Four, Section related to the attendance, Item 25, first clause [in Turkish]), all students who have already enrolled the course should attend at least 70% of the lectures throughout the semester of interest. Students who do not meet the attendance criterion will fail with the letter grade “IA“. It is students’ responsibility to follow up with their intermittent attendance status throughout the semester. The instructor will not announce and/or disseminate the attendance status of the students.
  • In case a problem and/or dispute emerges related to lectures such as grading, office hours, and so on, it must be consulted the lecturer face to face. Students are responsible for the consequences of not consulting the lecturer but of taking advice from some others.
  • Lecturer’s official schedule must be followed in order to attend office hours and have individual meetings.
